Cabaret Caliente is a new variety show from the fine folks at the Theatre Guild of Ancon, Panama’s longest-running theater. In their man decades of existence they’ve put on hundreds of shows, from classics to musicals to original plays and shows such as Deep Fried Comedy and the smash hit Improv8.
So, what’s the deal with Cabaret Caliente? This is the TGA’s spin on a burlesque cabaret hour, a showcase of talented people performing song, dance, comedy and offbeat routines with a tongue-in-cheek sensibility.
The set and costumes invoke the feeling of a cabaret bar, something akin to the 1950’s burlesque aesthetic: high heels, corsets, sexy women and the men who ogle them. The ambiance is eclectic, and the bar options are top notch (and afordable) as they’ve always been.
The acts come fast and furious: one moment you have a classic “Who’s On First?” comedy routine; the next is a burlesque-style striptease featuring a beautiful, voluptuous woman; after that we’re treated to a heartfelt monologue by the always-charismatic GerryD (from The Breakfast Show!) and next is a ventriloquist routine with an alpaca.
In between there are musical numbers, stand-up comedy routines, ballet, and in an unexpected stroke I almost fell out of my chair when they included the cabaret scene immortalized by Madeline Kahn in Blazing Saddles, hilariously performed by Carina Weber:
Tickets for the show are available through MiEventos by clicking here. You can also roll up to the theater and take your chances at the box office but beware that sometimes they run out of seats, specially on weekends. Get the seats on stage if you can!
Whether you’re on stage or in the audience, you’re bound to have a great time: grab a drink from the bar to get in the mood and enjoy yourself with this crew of talented performers.
